The Helis Academy strives to optimise the Life Sciences and Health Sector in Flanders and the Netherlands. The Helis Academy focuses on the development and coordination of appropriate training, internships and traineeships in the Life Sciences and Health sector by matching companies’ job requirements and profiles to curricula and develops new training programs where needed. In this way, the academy increases the industry-readiness of life scientists.
The field of technology and life sciences is a fast-paced, international field that is driven by innovative solutions. It uses a diversity of technological developments in its continuous quest to improve both health (care) of humans, animals and plants. Interestingly, the complementarity of the technologies that are being used results in a broad number of applications in healthcare, animal care and agriculture. For example, diagnostic tests are being created and optimized, leading to a faster identification of diseases or shortages. Furthermore, curative treatments and therapies are also being developed and refined. Are you curious about the impact of (bio)technology on health (care) of humans, animals or plants? This applied training submerged 17 students for one week further in the professional world of (bio)technology.
Five days, five inspiring visits and business cases
Day 1 – Health House (September 14, 2020)
Health House is a world class experience center where visitors can discover the future of health and care based on scientifically correct and objective information. Since the opening on the 18th of March 2018 we already received more than 10.400 visitors, from whom 90-95% medical professionals are. In a second phase we are expanding the experience center to a center of excellence where we want to become a reference center regarding the future of health and care. Including giving high level trainings to medical professionals.

Day 2 – reMYND (September 15, 2020)
While current symptomatic treatments barely address the symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease and all new developments aim to slow down the disease progression at best, reMYND wants to do better. Its Alzheimer treatment has shown in animal models to not only fully stop the disease progression, but actually reverse it and restore cognition. Similarly, their diabetes program has shown to restore the insulin production in the pancreas of mice and turn back the disease. reMYND is now gearing up to assess in the coming years whether these pre-clinical findings translate into patients. In the business case, reMYND’s team will ask you to come up with some solutions to further development of its Alzheimer’s program.
